There is power in fashion when at the age of twelve one is knowledgeable in the art of creating dress and right there and there one becomes a fashion designer.

Just like that,  a then child from Caguas, Puerto Rico knew he wanted to be a fashion designer.

Twenty one years later, the now professor at EDP University has accomplished so much more.

Recently we spoke with fashion designer Reynaldo José Flores, who participates in the exhibition  The Power of Teal, which is located on the second level of Plaza Las Americas Shopping Center, in San Juan, Puerto Rico to benefit @lasvocesderhaiza and Cervical Cancer awareness thanks to EDP University and the Puerto Rican Fashion History Council.

A collective of thirty local designers including Flores  show an original design based on the striking tonality of teal.

The dressmaker whipped up a gala dress in taffeta, and golden lace, which has a pattern of arabesques embroidered in golden colored glass, sequins and swarovski crystals.

The red carpet dress is inspired by paintings, adornments, fashions and furniture belonging to the Rococo and Baroque period.

Reynaldo has participated in fashion events such as the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Costa Rica, and the MBFW in El Salvador.

As a journalist I was lucky to see the artist form. 

I met the designer as a twelve-year-old, and I was able to interview him thanks to the designer, teacher and creator of Centro Moda the incomparable Lisa Thon, who discovered this Puerto Rican talent.

As for the dress presented at the fashion event, Reynaldo wanted to make a gown with a modern silhouette, using as reference the past.

For the creation of the evening gown I designed a model with a princess cut, and a mermaid silhouette. The skirt is pursed, obviously to impart volume.

This detail and the embroidered lace, the color and elements that come from the excess and the drama of fashion of the 17th century  turned into a sexy gown, with an air of the 90s, a current trend at the moment.

What is the greatest satisfaction of this fashion connoisseur?

As a teacher, students learn, and can use what they have learned to open walks in life.

Their success is the greatest possible satisfaction, the one who truly gives, expects nothing in return.

If there is no passion in what one does, there is nothing.

It should be mentioned that Flores was the first graduate in the course of the digital fashion design program of EDP University, in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.

The man, the designer and the teacher is opening the door to creativity, beauty, and purpose for himself and so many others.

Recientemente conversamos con el diseñador y profesor de modas en EDP University, Reynaldo José Flores quien participa en la exhibición El Poder del Verde Azulado/The Power of Teal, la cual se ubica en el segundo nivel de Plaza Las Américas.

Junto a unos treinta diseñadores Flores muestra un vestido el cual partiendo de la llamativa tonalidad creó un modelo de gala en tafetán, y encaje dorado, el cual posee un patrón de arabescos bordados en pedrería.

La pieza estuvo inspirada en la pintura, el adorno, la moda y el mueble perteneciente al  periodo Rococó y Barroco.

Entre su que hacer  como profesor en EDP University, este saca de su tiempo para participar de eventos de moda local, y en el extranjero como el Mercedes Benz Fashion Week de Costa Rica y el MBFW de El Salvador.

Como periodista tuve la suerte de ver al artista formarse, ya que aun siendo un jovencito de doce años pude conocerle gracias a la diseñadora, profesora y creadora del Centro Moda, la incomparable Lisa Thon quien descubrió este talento boricua.

En cuanto al vestido presentado en el evento de modas, Reynaldo deseaba realizar una pieza con una silueta moderna, utilizando un referente del pasado.

Para la creación del vestido recurrí a un modelo con un corte de princesa, y silueta de sirena. La falda esta fruncida, de manera evidente para impartirle volumen. Esto junto al encaje bordado, el color y elementos que provienen del exceso y el drama de la moda del siglo 17 nació un vestido con un aire de los 90s, tendencia muy actual en estos momentos.

Cabe mencionar que Flores fue el primer egresado en el curso del programa de diseño de modas digital de EDP University.

¿Cual es la satisfacción de este conocedor de la moda?

Como profesor, que los estudiantes aprendan, y puedan usar lo aprendido para abrirse camina en la vida.

Un éxito de ellos es la mayor satisfacción posible, el que verdaderamente da, no espera nada a cambio.

Si no hay pasión en lo que uno hace no hay nada, sentencia el también maestro de ilustración de modas.
